Updated: Jul 21, 2025

The net growth in household incomes held steady for China’s foodservice consumers in April. After celebrating the Qingming festival and preparing for Labor Day, consumers reined in their expectations to dine out more in May. This month’s China Consumer Sentiment Study highlights April performance, Labor Day travel plans, and the impact tariffs are having on consumers.

Highlights:

  • After falling back in March, net growth of household income levels rebounded in April.

  • Consecutive months with holidays reduced the share of consumers planning to increase dining out in the next month.

  • Consumers increased their spending on home cooking and savings, while Labor Day helped fuel travel spending.

  • About 40% of consumers have travel plans for Labor Day.
